Logrono – Burgos
122.3km, 08hrs 41mins, 1870m total
climb
We had the bikes
in the room from last night, I carried them up the narrow stairs for
3 floors, dedication to the cause! I dragged them back down on my
grumbling knees at 6.30am as we had decided to go for a very long day
today through boring countryside to achieve our first day over 100
miles (160km).
Only just light we
set off with heavy bags of sandwiches and fruit, plus two bottles of
water for the day.
The first section
was fine and we got moving and warmed up leaving the town.
The problem was a
massive headwind as soon as we were in any unprotected area. Think it
was about 25-30kph, direct from the west. This meant our cruising
speed was just not fast enough, despite the possibility of an easy
journey, we calculated that we would not make it in time, so we had
to stop in Burgos.
We arrived quite
late at about 7pm, but the sun was really shining despite the wind.
We searched for a campsite on the GPS and found one that was next to
the river and very large. It was nice, with a big bar café and quite
busy with a lot of campervans. The receptionist was a middle aged
Spanish lady with pretty good English, but by god did she talk! She
told us all about her whole family in the first 5 mins, and after 15
mins she was still going, even with other campers waiting to check in
behind us as well. Her son was a civil engineer and he couldn’t get
a job but wanted to study a masters in Luxembourg and she wanted him
to get a job and she had been crying about it today and she was
separated from her husband and and and... Nice, but a bit of a shock
after such a long day!
We pitched up the
tent and then went 3km on the bikes to get some food.
After dinner,
Johanna was speaking to some Belgian couple who were doing the
Compostella route by car and camping (they do it every year) and they
said that the weather was going to be scorching tomorrow and then get
very bad in the next few days. Without any Internet they were the
only forecast we had, and considered a day off to soak up the last
day of sun.
