We decided to stay in Conques for a day
to have a look around as we the actual town is on top of the hill and
we didn’t go through it on the way. It is also supposed to be one
of France's greatest secrets and areas of outstanding beauty (as many
signs said so on the way).
The medieval town has been maintained,
little or no building work has been done in the town, the original
old streets and buildings still remain the way they were. It was
definitely popular with the pilgrims. The cathedral in the centre is
definitely very big.
We strolled up there after getting up
and had the obligatory coffee and pastries at a hectic cafe. We had a
good look around and talked to a woman in her toy shop for a while.
We bought some very expensive local pate and honey, and a huge round
loaf of bread sold by the kilo for dinner. Also some extra pastries
for the road.
I wanted to try the fishing again, so I
scouted out a good spot whilst Johanna waited for the washing to
finish. After we hung it all out to dry in the sun on the managers
airer, we walked over to the spot I found on a cliff. We didn't catch
anything, but saw crayfish and its always something nice to do to
waste some time in the sun. Someday we will be barbecuing a huge
trout that I will catch :)
After we ate most of our loaf and had a
glass of wine, we were going to retire to the tent and write some
blog and have an early night, but the French couple who were in the pitch friendly
opposite us invited us for drink at their caravan. They were really
nice and we used their power to charge the laptop whilst chatting
away and eating some meat snacks and sampling their French wines.
Jean-Claude and Denise were from a small town just outside St
Etienne called Montregard which it turns out he had been the mayor of
for the last 5 years! It was nice to try out our poor French in a more relaxed atmosphere. Denise spoke no English but Jean-Claude was pretty good.
