Garmisch Partenkirchen – Heiterwang
45.1km, 4hr 38mins, 1025m total climb
After a bit of a lie in and a
multi-course breakfast we rolled out into Garmisch around 09.00 to
stop at Lidl for drinks and food for the day. Only then we realised
that the days route wasn’t on the GPS. I unpacked the panniers to boot
up the laptop to download it whilst Johanna was inside, to load the
route on. Sod's law I had forgotten to download it to the laptop
either. Damn. So we detoured into Garmisch town to find WiFi and
another coffee. Unbelievable in this day and age, but nowhere in the
numerous cafés seemed to had heard of the internet let alone WiFi.
We had an offer in a Tchibo to but an internet 'stick' but pressed
on. Eventually we found McDonald’s and after a bit of confusion got
on the internet and downloaded the route.
It was going to be a short day, but one
with some climbs. We took it easy. Beautiful Alpine landscape running
through a few towns which were all but deserted. Weather was good.
The only incident came when we tried to
avoid what we thought was a Motorway and doubled back down the
slip-road. Two hours later we were 800m further along the same road
(which actually wasn't that bad) after pushing and sliding our bikes
up a 1:10 gravel track for 200m vertical. Tough going and the camera can't ever do the incline justice.
Arriving in Heiterwang we were
surrounded by 2000m peaks and a eerily quiet atmosphere. We planned
to stay here for a couple of days.
