Lindau – Walenstadt
97.6km, 6hr 44mins, 596m total climb
We left Hotel Bulligan and headed
towards Lindau town centre and the Bodensee. We tried to stay
alongside the lake for as long as possible, for about 15km. Again we
crossed the border back into Austria and then headed towards
Switzerland, clearly signposted also for cyclists. The signs lead us
onto the Swiss cycling super-high-speed highway for most of the
remaining route which followed the river and was smoothly paved. We managed to achieve our fastest moving average speed so far, 21kph.
Greg and I were both quite excited to
cross into Lichtenstein. As we both have never been there, Greg made
sure to plan the route directly through Lichtenstein as one of the
highlights of our Alp Crossing. We expected golden pavements and
champagne fountains. We finally crossed into Lichtenstein just before
Vaduz but as we stayed on the super highway which looked the same all
the way and despite being 5km outside Vaduz town centre we continued
oblivious until we noticed on the GPS about 15km to late that we
past it. Distracted by the beautiful scenery and our fast
progress, the Lichtenstein experience went completely past us.
We originally planned to camp in
Walenstadt but the weather didn't seem good enough the day before so
we booked a hotel room in a berg hotel in Walenstadt at 1000m altitude. Cost 80EUR
– welcome to Switzerland!
30km into our route, however, we
decided to camp anyway as the weather seemed fine and there was no
rain. We cycled to the campsite in Walenstadt. It was nice, clean,
and tidy. And as to be expected mid April totally empty. Overall it
was a great campsite (best so far), directly at the lake, clean
facilities, and long longed for benches to cook and sit on.
The only problem it turned out was that
we couldn't cancel our reservation for the hotel room so we decided to change the date of
the booking, not loose out EUR80 and have a rest day tomorrow. This
was all thanks to a phone call back to Warmington HQ (Thanks Les!) as
the phone calls would have cost a fortune and we didn't have any
Internet access to get the info we needed.
The rest of the evening was cold but
very relaxing, we ate soup and then retired to the tent and watched
two films before falling asleep.
