Straubing – Bach an der Isar
82.9km, 5hr 10 min, 527m total climb
We set off from Straubing following the
Danube downstream towards Deggendorf, where we met up with the river
Isar and an upstream in the Direction of Munich. We stopped for a
coffee in Plattling and really got the first hit of strong sun on the
trip, it was turning out to be a factor 30 day for those of us who
are frecklickly challenged!
The route was almost completely flat
though and we got a much better average speed, especially on the
Danube sections, and road sections that were nice smooth tarmac. The
Isar route was mostly unpaved. The day got hotter and clearer as we
went on and by the time we arrived at our first camp-site the sky was
completely clear and around 24 degrees. Perfect. The camp-site is
situated at the back-end of a small town, next to a Backersee
(man-made lake) which was popular for fishing and swimming. We
introduced ourselves and ordered a couple of drinks and a Leberkas
which we quickly assimilated.
The camp-site itself on inspection was
a bit different to what we were expecting. All of the plots were
permanent homes, with the merest hint of a caravan or motor-home
hidden somewhere in the vast appendages of corrugated plastic and
modified gazebos. Some even had water gardens, car garages or even
small workshops attached. Johanna informed me that most of these
places are only inhabited on weekends or holidays, as the owners also
have normal homes elsewhere.
We checked out the vacant plots and
settled on one with a tree hanging over for shade and a gravel floor
to avoid the mud. Actually got a good nights sleep and it was quiet
and strangely un-weird at night considering. Not too bad for €15.
