Day 2 - 09/04/2013 - Total so far 128.7km

Beroun - Plzen
68.7km, 3hr 56min (moving), 946m total climb

Got up early this morning and started on the route at 08.00. First section was pretty tough with a climb for breakfast leaving Beroun.  Cold and raining, the weather didn't improve much until we climbed out of Horovice at about 20km.  We followed the 605 up till this point which was a busy A-road.

Climbing up into the forested hills was a relief, with the rain stopping and the higher work rate warming us up again. Did around 10km in t-shirt even though it was probably still about 5 degrees.  Lots of snow around in the deeper parts alongside frozen streams.

Mostly downhill from halfway, we made some good time, and it looked like we would get to Plzen around 13.00 but the last section was a pain as we followed a complicated route to avoid the 605.

We checked into the Hostel River which got good reviews, but is actually a bit crap! Especially compared to the Hotel OK from last night which was pretty good.  Got a twin room with shared bathroom.  Bikes locked indoors in the hall.  Bedding doesn’t smell like it was laundered so we will break out the sleeping bags for the first time and leave the window open. All part of the experience and I am sure it won't be the worst...  £26!

Got here so early we had enough time to visit the town, including the Pilsner Urquell brewery museum for lunch (Ghoulash and Vienese Dumplings with Chocolate cake for £20 with 2 drinks each), and also the brewery itself but we were too late (and too tired!) for the tour.  Lots of other buildings to see in a quite compact city centre.

Route below. The time recording is wrong as it must have got a GPS signal last night as I checked the route so looks like we started at 5.40pm.  Also means we don't have a total time but it was around 5.5hrs.
