Day 3 - 10/04/2013 - Total so far 188.7km

Plzen - Domazlice
60km, 6hr 32min, 849m total climb

We got out of the Hostel River as soon as possible, had a couple of Ice coffee cartons and a couple of cereal bars.  A group of 30 or so middle aged Lithuanian women arrived at around 24.00 last night and took a while settling in so we didn’t sleep well either.  Then in the morning we had to wait 15 mins ringing the doorbell of the hostel supervisor guy so we could return the key and get our cash deposit back. We won't recommend this place!

We headed for a breakfast stop in Dobrany which we spotted on the map the night before, to get a proper coffee and some bacon and eggs.  The rain poured down for the first while and we looked forward to the restaurant. It was 15km away and we were quite hungry when we got there at 9.25 but decided to wait inside till they started for lunch at 10.00.  We might have over ordered!  Have a look at the breakfast pic below. Toast and cheese, Kartoffelpuffer with cheese and kraut and a big plate of 4 eggs each cooked over loads of ham slices. £13.

We rolled ourselves out of there at about 11.00 and into the rain again. We headed for the hills and got back on cycle route 3.  The rain got lighter, but as we found ourselves in more open fields, without the protection of any trees or buildings, we really noticed the wind.  We ended up ploughing into this 22km/h strong headwind all day and it really took some beating.  The hills became a lot harder, we even had to pedal to get downhill sometimes!  Any shade from the wind was a relief and the the hills between trees were fine.  Our average was knocked back to 15.1kph, from 17.6kph yesterday. It was a LOT tougher today.

Got to Domazlice at about 14.30 and decided to have an early dinner again at 15.30 as the breakfast was wearing off! Not sure how the calorie balance is today, possibly quite positive!  Anyway, we need the extra to get us the 90km to Straubing tomorrow.

The Penzion is a palace compared to last night, nice clean studio flat overlooking the main street, (see last pic).  Time to stock up the sleep bank!

Also, interesting to see what the Harry Potter Author is known as in the Czech Republic. I heard her latest book was a bit of a departure from character, but come on, that’s a bit harsh! :)
